Emblem of Orange The Emblem of Orange

William, Count of Toulouse and nephew of Charlemagne, siezed Orange in the 9th century from the Saracens whose leader was Thiebaud of Africa, becoming the first William of Orange. He had the nickname Court Nez (or Short Nose), possibly resulting from a close encounter in battle. His coat-of-arms bore a black Cornet, which sounds like Court Nez in french, the name by which he subsequently became known. This seems to be the origin of the horn above three oranges on the emblem.
